A Little of Italy in Every Bite. Build a cheese board worth gathering around with Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace. Watch the video for the arrangement, then follow the recipe below for a mix of creamy, crunchy, sweet and savory bites—perfect for a dinner party, holiday gathering or wine night at home.

Serves: 6–8 as an appetizer
Prep time: 20 minutes hands-on
Tempering: Take cheeses out 30–45 minutes before serving; assembly can overlap.
Board: 12 × 16-inch wooden board with handle

Quick Answer: Anchor the board with the firm cheeses, arrange the soft cheeses within easy reach, then fill the spaces with pears, grapes, nuts and crackers. Finish with jam, honey and fresh thyme.

THE FOUR ITALIAN CHEESES

Parmigiano Reggiano

Hard, aged cow’s milk cheese from Emilia-Romagna with nutty, savory flavor and crunchy crystals. Leave as a wedge and break into rough chunks with a short cheese knife.

CasArrigoni Taleggio

Soft washed-rind cow’s milk cheese from Lombardy with a buttery, mild, fruity flavor and an aromatic rind. Cut cold into square pieces, leaving the rind on.

Toniolo Bastardo del Grappa

Semi-firm mountain cow’s milk cheese from Veneto with a mellow, milky, lightly sweet flavor. Cut into thin triangles or slim wedges.

CasArrigoni Gorgonzola Dolce

Soft, creamy blue cow’s milk cheese from Lombardy with a sweet flavor and gentle blue tang. Serve a small block with its own spreader.

ITALIAN CHEESE BOARD INGREDIENTS

4–6 oz wedge Parmigiano Reggiano
4 oz CasArrigoni Taleggio
4 oz Toniolo Bastardo del Grappa
4 oz CasArrigoni Gorgonzola Dolce
2 ripe pears (Bartlett or Bosc)
1 small bunch red grapes, plus a few green grapes
½ cup roasted almonds
¼ cup shelled pistachios
¼ cup pecans or walnuts
2 tbsp dried cranberries
2 tbsp fig or apricot jam
2 oz honey (wildflower or acacia), in a small cup
Long thin flatbread crackers
Round thin crisps
A few sprigs fresh thyme
Optional: a little lemon juice for the sliced pear

Pro Tip: Cut the soft cheeses while cold for cleaner pieces, then let them temper before serving. Use one knife or spreader per cheese so the blue cheese does not travel to the others.

ITALIAN CHEESE BOARD INSTRUCTIONS

Temper the Cheese

Step 1: Take all four cheeses out of the refrigerator 30–45 minutes before serving. Cut the Taleggio and Gorgonzola while still cold, then let them warm up.

Anchor the Corners

Step 2: Set the Parmigiano wedge at the top left, near the handle. Place the Bastardo del Grappa wedge at the top right.

Place the Soft Cheeses

Step 3: Set the Taleggio pieces and Gorgonzola Dolce at the lower left, where guests reach first. Give the Gorgonzola its own small spreader.

Stand the Crackers Up

Step 4: Lean the long flatbread crackers against the Parmigiano so they rise behind it like a backdrop.

Add the Pear

Step 5: Keep one pear half whole for height on the left side. Slice another half thinly and fan the slices next to it. Slice the remaining pear to replenish the board as guests help themselves. Brush the cut pear with a little lemon juice, if desired, to help limit browning.

Pile the Grapes

Step 6: Snip the grapes into small clusters and pile them at the center right, against the Bastardo wedge.

Fill the Center with Nuts

Step 7: Spill the almonds, pistachios and pecans or walnuts in a loose line between the cheeses and the grapes.

Shingle the Round Crisps

Step 8: Overlap the round crisps in a row down the center of the board.

Add the Sweet Touches

Step 9: Drop a spoonful of jam beside the Taleggio and scatter the dried cranberries around it. Set the honey cup with a small spoon next to the board.

Garnish and Serve

Step 10: Lay a few thyme sprigs across the center, over the nuts and grapes. Serve right away with a separate knife or spreader for each cheese.

Tips and Pairings

The Best Bites to Build

Gorgonzola Dolce: Pair with honey and ripe pear.
Parmigiano Reggiano: Add a drizzle of honey and an almond.
Taleggio: Spread jam on a round crisp and top with cheese.

Taste mild to bold: Bastardo del Grappa, Taleggio, Parmigiano Reggiano, then Gorgonzola Dolce.

Wine Pairings

Try Prosecco or Pinot Grigio with the lighter cheeses. Pour Valpolicella or a sweet Moscato d’Asti alongside the Gorgonzola Dolce.

Serving and Leftovers

Keep a separate knife or spreader beside each cheese. Replenish the sliced pear and crackers as guests help themselves. Wrap leftover cheeses separately in parchment or cheese paper and refrigerate.
